This summer, if you spot someone from Finance and Business Affairs with a tape measure, don’t worry; It’s all part of an effort to improve how campus spaces are used.

Wayne State University’s space planning teams, led by Stuart Rose, senior director for planning and space solutions, are surveying classrooms and offices to gather accurate data on the size and use of spaces, which will guide future space planning. The goal is to use campus space more efficiently, reduce costs, and enhance the experience for students, faculty, and staff.

“At Wayne State, we are committed to building a campus that reflects the values of access, innovation and community,” said Bethany Gielczyk, senior vice president for finance and business affairs. “This long-term plan is not just about improving buildings. It’s about shaping an environment where every student, faculty and staff member can thrive. By investing in smarter spaces and stronger connections, we are laying the foundation for a more inclusive and sustainable future.”

This initiative supports the university’s long-term Campus Plan: The Wayne Framework — a strategic vision focused on creating a more connected, sustainable and student-centered environment. Originally unveiled in 2019, after a year of campus stakeholder input and led by the planning firm Dumont Janks, the Campus Plan is already taking shape. Key goals, including a renovated M. Roy Wilson State Hall and a reimagined use of the David Adamany Undergraduate Library with the newly launched Student Success Hub, are complete.

Additional goals are underway, including the creation of a new Health Sciences Research Building and a reactivated Keast Commons.

The next phase, supported by a recently Board-approved $12 million initial investment, is the concentration of academic programs in the campus core, which will foster cross-departmental engagement and advance academic and research endeavors. As part of this phase, Wayne State will

relocate academic programs from the Maccabees Building to the main campus to strengthen collaboration and connections between students and faculty.

The Maccabees Building will instead house administrative departments. This plan improves space use and allows for long-term redevelopment or decommissioning of underutilized campus buildings — and this summer’s space survey is a key step in bringing it to life.

“We appreciate the collaboration and enthusiasm among our community as we work to enhance our campus,” said Bradley Dick, senior associate vice president for finance and business affairs. “Our strategic efforts now will certainly benefit students, faculty and staff while also making Wayne State even better for future Warriors.”
